1 dead, several others injured in multi-vehicle crash in Spanish Fork Canyon

SPANISH FORK – One person was killed and at least four others were injured in a multi-vehicle crash in Spanish Fork Canyon Saturday afternoon.

In addition to the fatality, Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Eddie Wright said two people were in critical condition and at least two people suffered less serious injuries in the crash.

The collision occurred near Diamond Fork Road on U.S. Highway 6 at 2:16 p.m

According to a statement from UHP, the driver of an eastbound black Kia Soul lost control and crashed into a westbound white Kia Sportage. An oncoming Kia Telluride then crashed head-on into the Kia Soul, ejecting the back seat passenger of the Telluride from the vehicle.

The backseat passenger in the Telluride apparently was not wearing a seatbelt, the statement said, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to police, both the Soul driver and passenger suffered injuries, while “several occupants” of the Sportage suffered minor injuries and were all taken to a hospital by ambulance.

The Telluride’s two other occupants suffered minor injuries but were not taken to the hospital, according to the department. Wright added that a medical helicopter was called to transport those involved, but it was unable to land due to high winds.

UHP had not released the identity of the person who died Saturday evening.

The highway was closed in both directions until the Utah Department of Transportation was able to open one lane in each direction around 4:10 p.m.

UDOT has advised motorists to “expect extended delays” and to use an alternate route if possible.
