National Weather Service officials expect a clipper system moving into the Upper Midwest to bring at least 1 to 3 inches of snow to the Great Lakes region Thursday afternoon.

Officials said there is a 40% chance of snow in parts of north-central and northeastern Illinois and northwest Indiana.

A period of snow is expected Thursday afternoon into the evening, especially north of Interstate 80, where up to an inch of snow accumulation is possible near the Wisconsin border, officials said. More snow showers are expected to develop late Thursday evening, officials said.

A clipper system falling east through the Northern Plains into the Great Lakes is expected to bring heavy snowfall on a path from Minnesota through northern Wisconsin, officials said.

Snow mixed with rain is expected to turn to snow with a high of 31 degrees. There is a 90% chance of snow Thursday evening, with a possible 1 to 2 inches of snow, officials said.

Further snow showers are expected before noon on Friday.

Afternoon conditions at O’Hare International Airport were cloudy with a high of 32 degrees. Further southwest at Midway Airport, conditions were similar.
