First baseman Carlos Santana and the Cleveland Guardians have agreed to terms on a one-year, $12 million deal that is still pending, a source tells Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. The club has not confirmed the signing.

Even at age 38, Santana was a valuable player on and off the field while appearing in 150 games for the Twins last season. He hit 23 homers for the second straight year and posted a 114 wRC+, his best mark since his 2019 All-Star campaign.

Defensively, Santana posted a career-best 14 outs above average at first base, the most of any player at the position.

Santana also maintained his consistently excellent plate discipline. His strikeout rate was below 20% for the 13th straight season. His walk rate (10.9%) has never fallen out of double digits in his 15-year career, and his chase rate of 23.4% was well below the MLB average (28.5%).

Since his debut with Cleveland in 2010, Santana has appeared in 2,080 regular-season games, making him one of three active major league players to appear in at least 2,000 games. the other two are Andrew McCutchen (2,127) and Freddie Freeman (2,032). Santana owns a career slash line of .242/.354/.431 with 1,789 hits, 324 home runs and 1,082 RBIs.

After spending 10 of his first 11 seasons in Cleveland, Santana has played for five franchises (Royals, Mariners, Pirates, Brewers, Twins) as of early 2021. But whenever he’s landed, he’s always been a strong mid-level threat, hitting at least 18 dingers every year since 2011 and topping 20 home runs nine times. His best season came in ’19, when he hit 34 home runs and posted a wRC+ of 138.
