2024 Rule 5 Draft Results

2024 Rule 5 Draft Results

The draft of Rule 5 2024 took place this afternoon at the Winter Meetings in Dallas. The results of the design are shown below.

As a reminder, the Rule 5 draft is a way for players who are potentially talented enough for the big leagues but are blocked by their current clubs to find opportunities elsewhere. All players who were 18 years old or younger at the time of their original signing and have played five professional seasons, and all players who signed at age 19 or older and now have four professional seasons under their belt that did not occur in their 40s . season of a club. Most men on the roster are eligible to be selected in the Rule 5 draft.

Although the Amateur Draft (Rule 4) now has a lottery to determine the selection order, the Rule 5 draft still follows the old-fashioned route of reversing the order of the just-ended season. Clubs must have a free roster spot of 40 players in order to make a selection, but are not required to make a selection on their turn. If they make a selection, they must pay $100,000 to the team they choose from. The players selected must remain on the active roster (or injured list) for the entire 2025 season or they will be placed on waivers. If they approve waivers, they must be returned to their original team. They cannot be transferred to minors.

In last year’s edition, several key players changed clubs. The ones left Mitch Spence by the Yankees with the top pick and kept him all year. Justin Slaten was acquired by the Mets from the Rangers and then sold to the Red Sox. Players like Anthony Santander And Ryan Pressly have been notable picks in recent years while guys like it George Bell And Roberto Clemente can be found deeper in the history books.
