4 dead in GFL gas leak in Bharuch, police launch investigation | Ahmedabad News

Bharuch district police on Sunday began an investigation into the toxic gas leak from a CMS plant of Gujarat Fluorochemicals Limited (GFL) at Dahej in Bharuch district, which led to the death of four workers on Saturday.

According to officials at Dahej Marine Police Station, the four workers were in the production unit of the CMS plant when a gas leak due to a valve malfunction caused them to inhale toxic fumes and faint. The workers were taken to a local hospital where they died. Bharuch district police, which took the four bodies into custody on Sunday, said forensic experts and industrial safety teams rushed to the spot to investigate the matter after the accident on Saturday.

A senior officer of Bharuch district police said, “The incident took place around 9.30 pm on Saturday when a leak occurred in the distillation unit of the Chloromethane Plant (CMS). The plant has a mixture of methyl chloride, CT chloroform and hydrogen chloride vapor. The leak affected four workers who were immediately taken to the company’s medical department and then transferred to a specialist hospital in Dahej. They were admitted to the intensive care unit but succumbed there in the early hours of Sunday.”

The deceased are Rajesh Magnadia (48), Mahesh Nandlal (25), Suchitkumar Prasad (29) and Mudrika Thakor Yadav (29). While Nandlal and Prasad were from Sonbhadra in Uttar Pradesh, Yadav was from Thana Kharogi in Jharkhand. Magnadia was a native of Bharuch district.

Sub-divisional magistrate Manisha Manani said, “The bodies of the deceased workers have been sent to the civil hospital for autopsy where their families are present. The administration was informed in the morning and we have initiated an investigation into the incident.”

The GFL later released a statement saying, “Each family will receive an ex-gratia amount of Rs 30 lakh along with full settlement of statutory contributions, insurance benefits and outstanding salaries.” To secure the future of the family of our deceased employee, we offer also offer his ward employment and promote his education, including his engineering studies.
