49ers LB Dre Greenlaw injures his calf and is ruled out of the game

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw was unable to finish all four quarters in his second game Sunday afternoon due to a torn Achilles tendon.

More than a week after De’Vondre Campbell declined to play in the game against the Los Angeles Rams because Greenlaw was injured and was subsequently suspended for the final three games for conduct detrimental to the team, Greenlaw suffered another one in the first quarter Sunday Injury game against the Miami Dolphins.

This time it was his right calf.

During the week, Greenlaw was listed as questionable on the injury report, having played only 30 times against the Rams due to knee and hamstring soreness.

Against the Dolphins, Greenlaw played just four snaps on Miami’s first possession before getting started. He was visibly frustrated on the sideline and spent the next few minutes running and stretching, but didn’t get back into the game and was ejected from the field shortly after halftime.

It’s the latest injury setback in an extensive list for Greenlaw, who is expected to be an unrestricted free agent after the season. On Wednesday, Greenlaw told ESPN that he shouldn’t miss much more time because of what it could mean for his future in the league.

“I think, especially at this particular time and in my career, you can’t afford to get hurt anymore,” Greenlaw said. “I don’t want to be in this position again next year where I have to watch the whole team do it. I try my best to be as smart as possible about it.”

Since entering the league as a fifth-round pick in 2019, Greenlaw has missed 34 of a possible 98 regular-season games due to issues with his quadriceps, groin, calf and hamstring, and Achilles tendon.

Greenlaw had one tackle against the Dolphins before his exit. Second-year linebacker Dee Winters replaced Greenlaw as the weak-side linebacker, while Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles joined the base defensive packages as the strong-side linebacker.
