Elton John reveals he has lost his sight after a serious eye infection

Elton John didn’t let an eye infection stop him from enjoying his new musical in London’s West End theater district.

The 77-year-old “Rocket Man” hitmaker, who is known for wearing statement glasses, was in attendance The devil wears Prada Musical premiere on Sunday in the English capital.

He told the audience he couldn’t see what was happening on stage but was still pleased to be there.

“As some of you may know, I have been struggling and have now lost my sight. I didn’t get to see the performance, but I enjoyed it,” John said on stage, thanking his husband David Furnish, who was also there for the performance.

“For my husband, who is my rock because I couldn’t make it to many of the previews. I have a hard time watching it, but I love hearing it and it sounded good tonight,” he added.

John revealed to fans in September that he had suffered from an eye infection that limited his vision in one eye.

“I’m recovering, but it’s an extremely slow process and it will take some time before the affected eye can see again,” he wrote in an Instagram post.

He also explained that the illness has affected his ability to make new music.

“There is hope and encouragement that everything will be okay, but I’m kind of stuck at the moment. Going into the studio and recording, I don’t know,” he said Good morning America in an interview.

Newsweek has contacted John’s rep via email seeking comment.

The The devil wears Prada Premiere was a star-studded event attended by a number of high-profile celebrities including fashion Editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, fashion designer Donatella Versace, Emily in Paris Star Lily Collins and actress Elizabeth Hurley with their son Damian Hurley.

In the new musical, Vanessa Williams plays the role of the ruthless fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestly, who was made famous by Meryl Streep in the feature film of the same name.

John wrote the original music for the musical with lyrics by Shaina Taub and Mark Sonnenblick.

The musical’s plot revolves around aspiring journalist Andy, who lands a coveted gig in the fictional theater runway Fashion magazine working for fashion’s most powerful icon – Editor-in-Chief Miranda Priestly.

Andy is forced to sacrifice her personal life to meet Miranda’s impossible demands as she ends up losing herself and jeopardizing her relationships by allowing herself to be seduced by the glamorous world of fashion.
