Arctic air means several freezing nights, according to Alabama’s forecast

Some very cold air will keep temperatures well below normal in Alabama through midweek, and then there is a chance of some rain. Watch the video forecast for the latest information. A FRONT AND A FEW SNOWERS The next wave of arctic air will bring some isolated light snow flurries to northern Alabama and Tennessee on Monday. This will not result in significant, measurable accumulation in Alabama, but light snow is possible over the northern part of the state and Tennessee. The mountains of eastern Tennessee and North Carolina will see heavier snowfall. Monday will be nice and cool ahead of the front. After a frosty start, temperatures will rise to the low 50s before the cold front passes. It will be bitterly cold on Monday evening and Tuesday morning. We expect lows in the mid 20s and a wind chill in the 10s by sunrise on Tuesday. Hold on to your heavy jacket because during the warmest part of the day, highs will only be in the 40s. The coldest day of the week will be Tuesday, and then the air will moderate a bit on Wednesday and Thursday before another cold front moves south. RAIN AWAIT The recent switch to a cold pattern and some decent rainfall in recent weeks has kept the increasing drought out of the headlines. There is good reason for this, as drought is primarily an agricultural problem unless water supplies are depleted. Right now we’re doing well in that department, but we’re still in an “extreme” drought, according to state climatologist Dr. forecast for the next seven days. A few showers will begin late Wednesday into Thursday, but most of the drenching rain will remain south of Interstate 20. There will be much less rain in northern Alabama. Friday will be dry with cooler temperatures as northwest winds quickly return. Highs will fall back into the 40s before further gradual warming. There may be some wet weather next weekend, but some adjustments to this forecast will be necessary over time. The timing and placement of the “best” rain for Saturday and Sunday is still very much in question.
