Weak wind chills and below freezing temperatures are forecast for Des Moines for days

Central Iowa experienced subfreezing temperatures and a wind chill between 0 and minus 10 degrees early Friday morning, activating the Polk County Extreme Temperature Plan.

According to a Facebook post from Polk County Emergency Management, the extreme temperature plan will remain in effect through Wednesday.

There will be a few cold days, but Craig Cogil, senior meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Des Moines, said temperatures will stay above 0 and get warmer as the days go by. The wind chill also remains above 0°C.

When will the extreme temperature plan be activated?

The extreme temperature plan is activated when temperatures reach 10 degrees with wind chill for three or more days, 5 degrees with wind chill for two or more days, or 0 degrees with wind chill for one or more days.

Where can I find warming accommodations in Des Moines and central Iowa?

The Polk County Extreme Temperature Plan also includes warming centers that provide shelter and a break from the cold.

The Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority is offering free rides to warming centers. When you get in, tell the driver that you need to go to a warming center.

Here is the National Weather Service Des Moines forecast for this weekend and next week:

Friday: Mostly sunny and a high of 27 degrees, with wind chills of up to 5 degrees and wind speeds of up to 21 miles per hour. The minimum temperature is expected to reach around 15 degrees. The National Weather Service forecasts severe weather is possible across southern and western Iowa Friday and into early Saturday morning.
