American Airlines flight returns to Chicago due to technical problems

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating an American Airlines flight that took off from Chicago and was forced to return due to a possible power issue reported by the crew.

According to the FAA, the concern prompted the Boeing 737-800 en route to Las Vegas to Chicago O’Hare International Airport just before 10 a.m. Sunday morning

An American Airlines spokesman told USA TODAY that the plane was under investigation and passengers boarded another plane.

“A check engine light indicated a possible mechanical issue which, upon inspection, proved to be false,” a spokesman said. “The flight landed safely and the customers later flew to LAS on a replacement aircraft.”

Last month, the FAA reported an investigation into another American Airlines flight that departed from Hawaii and performed an “accelerated climb” to avoid a nearby mountain.

In a statement sent to USA TODAY, an American Airlines spokesperson said the flight crew asked to turn right while ascending from Honolulu and was granted permission.
