3 dead, 5 wounded in shooting on Chicago Lawn

Three people were killed and five others were injured in a shooting Monday afternoon at the Chicago Lawn on the Southwest Side, according to Chicago police.

All three victims killed were men, Chicago Police Department patrol chief Jon Heim said at a news conference near the scene. Another man and four women were injured.

Emergency crews responded to a call about several people being shot near 59th Street and St. Louis Avenue shortly after 2 p.m., Chicago fire officials said.

According to the fire department, two people died at the scene of the accident.

Two people were transported to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and another person was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center. According to the fire department, all three victims were in serious to critical condition.

A sixth victim was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in fair to serious condition, according to fire officials.

Police blocked traffic in the 3500 block of West St. Louis Avenue as officers were observed entering and exiting a home. Children leaving a nearby school watched the police tape and stopped to look at the scene.

A woman who declined to give her name said she was seen walking onto the block half an hour before the shooting. At the time, several children were playing outside the home, she said.

“I’ve been here since 1977. This is not normal,” she said.
