NFL Insider reveals ugly new details about Matt Eberflus’ final days with the Bears

The Bears’ Matt Eberflus era is officially over, but that doesn’t mean we’ll stop gossiping about it!

Perhaps the least surprising news from the Bears’ decision to leave their head coach midseason — for the first time in team history — is that a new report provides some, er, unflattering details over the past few days.

According to a new, detailed report from The Athletic, Eberflus lost the locker room well before the Bears’ embarrassing Thanksgiving loss in Detroit. The final straw for most players was the Hail Mary loss in Washington — and the fact that Eberflus didn’t take much responsibility for his coaching mistakes in the immediate aftermath. Things got so dangerous that by the time the Bears had lost their sixth straight game, players were openly screaming at him.

“According to several players and staff in the locker room, some players asked why Eberflus didn’t call a timeout. Other players also got going… Multiple sources added that emotions between the players and their head coach were so high that Eberflus left the locker room immediately after his speech and exchange with the players. It was a moment for this Bears team that would inevitably force chairman George McCaskey to do something the franchise had never done before.

“The boys were angry,” said one staff member… “The locker room was ugly. There was a lot of screaming.”

While “Bears players yelled at their head coach” is certainly shocking, nothing in The Athletic’s post should come as much of a surprise to Bears fans or anyone following the team this season. The boys went on air with local media…unsubtle? … Complaints about the coaching staff since about mid-October, so much so that it felt like he had lost the locker room long before the Washington game.

The good news is that the Bears have clearly learned that you can actually fire a coach before the end of the season. Now they have six weeks to make a huge mess while really interesting football teams distract everyone from noticing. Progress!
