Ohio State, Miami learn fates - Cheztalalrestaurant

The upsets on the penultimate weekend of the college football season created drama over how the playoff rankings released by the committee Tuesday would affect the announcement of the 12-team field, which comes in less than a week.

The tension centered on how far Ohio State, ranked No. 2 last week, would fall after its loss to Michigan and whether Miami, ranked No. 6 last week, would suffer a loss of its overall hopes after its loss to Syracuse.

The Buckeyes slipped four spots to No. 6, ahead of Tennessee, SMU and Indiana. The rankings likely ensure Ohio State can host a first-round game. The Hurricanes weren’t so lucky. They fell five spots to No. 12, behind Alabama but ahead of Mississippi and South Carolina, three SEC teams with three losses each. It looks like the Crimson Tide are in line for a big run if things don’t change.

No. 1 Oregon retained the position it had held since it was first ranked Nov. 5. The Ducks will face No. 3 Penn State in the Big Ten championship game. Texas, like the Nittany Lions, moved up one spot to No. 2 and will face No. 5 Georgia in the fight for the SEC title.

No. 4 is Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish ended their season last week with a win against Southern California. They are apparently close to hosting a first round game, although their seeding will not be finalized until after the championship weekend.

Following No. 7 Tennessee are SMU and Indiana. Rounding out the top 10 is Boise State, the best-placed team in the Group of Five conferences. The Broncos are 10 spots ahead of No. 20 UNLV and will face the Rebels in the Mountain West title game on Friday.

Boise State also sits ahead of the two Big 12 title game participants – No. 15 Arizona State and No. 16 Iowa State. Should the Broncos stay ahead of the winner between the Sun Devils and Cyclones, they would earn a bye in the first round. They could also get a bye if No. 17 Clemson beats SMU in the ACC Championship Game.

After Texas A&M was eliminated, the conference with the most teams in the rankings is once again the SEC with seven. The Big Ten retains its five teams, with No. 21 Illinois entering after the top four. The Big 12 was reduced to four teams after Kansas State dropped from the rankings. The ACC added No. 22 Syracuse, which beat Miami on Saturday, increasing its representation to four teams. Mountain West holds two teams along with American Athletic, which lost to Tulane but won to Army and Memphis.

Tuesday’s College Football Playoff Committee rankings are the latest during the regular season. The final rankings will be announced on December 8th and will form the 12-man field that will determine this season’s national champion.

What is the College Football Playoff schedule?

The first round games will take place on campus on December 20th and 21st with the higher seeds hosting. The No. 5 will play against the No. 12, No. 6 will face No. 11, No. 7 will face No. 10 and No. 8 will face No. 9.

The winners of these games advance to the quarterfinals. The Fiesta Bowl will be played on December 31st. The Sugar Bowl, Rose Bowl and Peach Bowl will be played on January 1st.

The Orange Bowl and Cotton Bowl will have their semifinals on January 9th and 10th, respectively.

The championship game will be played on January 20th in Atlanta at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
