Desantis as SecDef? Here are the implications the move could have on Florida’s political landscape and military

FLORIDA — President Donald Trump’s controversial pick to lead the Defense Department, Pete Hegseth, is facing increasing scrutiny over his past and qualifications.

Well, reports from the Wall Street Journal suggest Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis could be a top replacement choice for the role.

Political experts say the impact on Florida politics could be significant if DeSantis travels to Washington.

Hegseth faces questions about his role

Hegseth, a former Fox News host, remained confident Wednesday after telling lawmakers that he has the president-elect’s support despite questions about the misconduct allegations. In a brief exchange, reporters pressed him about his standing with the president:

  • Reporter: “Are you going to get out?”

  • Hegseth: “NO.”

  • Reporter: “Does Trump still have faith in you?”

  • Hegseth: “Yes.”

However, sources close to Trump’s transition team told the Associated Press that contingency plans are being discussed and DeSantis is being considered as a possible replacement.

Florida’s political landscape could be changing

When DeSantis moves to the Pentagon, Florida Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Núñez will step in as governor. According to Michael Binder, a political science professor at the University of North Florida, this transition could create a domino effect in Florida’s leadership.

“Lt. “Governor Núñez would likely have to address a vacant Senate seat if Senator Marco Rubio were to join the administration as Secretary of State,” Binder said. “It is unclear whether Nunez would manage this from the ground up or whether there were already political arrangements, such as appointing someone like Lara Trump.”

Additionally, Núñez would need to appoint a new lieutenant governor and possibly a chief financial officer, as CFO Jimmy Patronis is expected to resign to run for Congress. Binder believes these decisions could represent an opportunity for Nunez to have a lasting impact on Florida politics.

What it could mean for Florida if DeSantis takes on the role of defense secretary

DeSantis has not commented publicly on speculation about a possible Cabinet role. But experts say his appointment could reconcile his difficult relationship with Trump while boosting his national profile.

Binder also pointed to potential benefits for Florida if DeSantis were to lead the Defense Department.

“Having a former governor in this role could mean more resources for Florida’s military bases and infrastructure,” Binder said. “It’s not a guarantee, but it should benefit the state.”

Additionally, DeSantis’ military background as a JAG officer, while unconventional for a defense secretary, could make him a good candidate for the position.

The role could also bolster his political resume if he decides to run for president in 2028.
