Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots is interested in a college job

After sitting out the 2024 season, many expected former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick to end up back in the NFL next year. That may not be the case in the end.

The fact that Belichick is not returning to the NFL side has nothing to do with the fact that he has no interest in coaching. In fact, he seems more interested in coaching than ever. Instead, it has to do with him thinking about switching to college football.

On Thursday, it was reported that Belichick had interviewed for the North Carolina Tar Heels job. Now it sounds like he might also be interested in other open positions at a university.

As Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer and Pat Forde reported, Belichick had a “genuine” interest in coaching a college team.

“Sources tell SI that Belichick, who won six Super Bowls as coach of the New England Patriots, definitely wants to coach again in 2025 after his absence this season,” they wrote. “His interest was believed to be focused on a return to the NFL – which could still be in play – but multiple sources say Belichick has been in discussions with North Carolina for several days and has a genuine interest in the college game. “

The transition to the college game would be interesting. Belichick would have to deal with recruiting and the NIL market, but his coaching would be a perfect fit.

His presence on the sidelines alone would make any team he coaches a prime recruiting target.

Over the course of his NFL head coaching career, Belichick won six Super Bowls with the Patriots. He compiled a career record of 302-165.

It will be interesting to see what Belichick ultimately decides to do. New England fans would rather see him coach in college than help lead another NFL team to success. They’ve already seen this with Tom Brady.

Only time will tell, but Belichick could very well make the move to college football for the next chapter of his career.
