Ian Machado Garry’s late comeback wasn’t enough at UFC 310 on Saturday as he suffered a decision loss to Shavkat Rakhmonov.
The former training partners both traveled to Las Vegas undefeated, but it was Rakhmonov who maintained his unbeaten streak and moved to 19-0. However, Machado Garry (15-1) was Rakhmonov’s first opponent to go the distance with the Kazakhs. The scorecards read 48-47, 48-47, 48-47 as Rakhmonov maintained his spot as the No. 1 contender in the welterweight division and set up a fight with champion Belal Muhammad.
Rakhmonov was scheduled to face Muhammad at UFC 310, but the Palestinian-American withdrew from the main event due to a bone infection. That prompted Machado Garry to step in and make his fight against Rakhmonov the co-main event at T-Mobile Arena.
In the main event of UFC 310, Alexandre Pantoja defended his flyweight title against Kai Asakura and lost to the Japanese in round two. Asakura, a former two-time bantamweight champion in Rizin, was signed by the UFC to give Pantoja a new challenger – after the Brazilian swept the 125-pound division. And while Asakura landed numerous signature knees, Pantoja was able to take him down and land a rear naked choke, causing Asakura to pass out.
