SALT LAKE CITY — It’s the season of holiday cheer, and if you’re in Utah, that means it’s also inversion season.

“It was really bad,” Tyler Allan said. “I train at the airport so it’s so bad to go home.”

The Allan family lives in Kearns.

“From our back yard we can (usually) see the entire eastern valley, and (now) we can’t even see a few miles away from us,” he said.

This is Abby Sugden’s first winter in Utah.

“I was a little surprised. I remember how excited I was to move here and see the mountains; sometimes they’re covered,” she said.

At the Christkindlmarkt Holiday Event at This Is The Place Heritage Park, people escape the inversion and the fog and get into the holiday spirit.

“I think these markets are a great opportunity to just learn about other cultures and have new experiences, and they just bring so many people together,” said Lucie Schoonmaker, who lives in Provo.

Let the lights shine brighter than the haze.

“You forget about it because of all the wonderful things you can do and see here,” Allan said.

They hope the haze in the sky reminds us of what we can do to clean the air.

“If you can carpool, carpool. If you can walk or take the bus, do your part,” Schoonmaker added.
