WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) – A record high was set in central Wisconsin on Saturday, while some locations were close to challenging the record high for the day. Clouds will gather again overnight into Sunday morning. Sunday will still be relatively mild, but there is a risk of a light wintry mix or snow showers in the Northwoods Sunday evening. A few more cold fronts will move through north-central Wisconsin through midweek, with increasing chances of snow showers and lake effect snow. An initial warning of the cold snap starting to hit the region on Wednesday, with the weakest wind chills expected on Thursday. The next storm system to hit the Badger State could arrive next weekend.
Partly to mostly cloudy Saturday evening with lows in the upper 20s to lower 30s.
There will be clouds on Sunday, with a chance of late afternoon snow showers or a light wintry mix across the northern half of the area. Highs Sunday in the upper 30s north to low 40s central and south.
The rain/snow showers or a light wintry mix will shift northward during Sunday evening, then it will be mostly cloudy. Any snowfall or ice accumulations will be minimal, with less than 1 inch of snow cover from Rhinelander to Land O’Lakes. Nonetheless, an initial warning is in effect for some slippery spots on the roads Sunday afternoon and evening, particularly north of Wausau.
Monday will be partly to mostly cloudy and windy as a cold front moves east across the region. There is a chance of snow showers in the north later in the day. Highs will be in the upper 30s to around 40s.
Colder times will return from Tuesday. Mostly cloudy with a chance of snow showers in the north while lake snow develops in the far north. Highs in the mid 20s. The coldest conditions will occur on Wednesday and Thursday. Significant cloud cover on Wednesday with the possibility of isolated snow showers, while lake snow continues in the far north. Highs will be in the low to mid 10s.
An initial warning for bitterly cold wind chill values Wednesday night into Thursday morning, which could reach -20° to -25°. There will be some sunshine on Thursday as afternoon temperatures barely climb into the upper single digits.
Less cold on Friday and next Saturday. A mix of sun and clouds on Friday. High in the mid 20s. There is a chance it will rain or snow as the next weather forecast is on the way for the new weekend. Highs in the mid 30s.
