Earthquake felt in California: Quake in Nevada felt as far as Sacramento

An earthquake in Nevada was felt as far away as Sacramento on Monday afternoon.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – A preliminary magnitude 5.8 Earthquake occurred near Yerington, Nevada. It fluctuated between M5.5 and 5.8.

According to the US Geological Survey, the quake occurred around 3:10 p.m. The center of gravity was about 50 miles east of Carson City, Nevada.

So far, people have reported feeling it in Reno, Roseville and Sacramento. There are no immediate reports of damage.

People may have noticed that the shaking was different than the quake in Nevada and last week off the North Coast.

“Last week’s earthquake was further away. The predominant motion you’ll feel when you’re this far away from last week’s magnitude 7 earthquake is the slow, long-period waves. They can travel a really long distance. The faster vibrations.” “The higher frequency shaking back and forth that we call it fades away more quickly,” said Dr. Angie Lux of UC Berkeley’s Earthquake Early Warning Project.

It comes about a week after California had its own notable earthquake, which hit the area with a magnitude of M7. Lux said the area tends to experience larger earthquakes than Nevada.

“In Nevada, western Nevada, we’re seeing a zone of extension, so this area in the crust is actually kind of being stretched apart, and that’s a slightly different tectonic environment,” she said. “We don’t expect there to be such large earthquakes in this area. Typically, a magnitude of around 6 is about what we would expect for a major earthquake in Nevada.”

For California, Lux said the latest quake was classified as moderate.

There have been several aftershocks so far. According to the USGS, there is a 14% chance that one or more aftershocks will exceed magnitude 5 within the next week.
