Luigi Mangione, suspect in the shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, is charged with murder in New York

Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, was charged with murder late Monday, court records show – as his family broke their silence about his arrest.

According to an online court filing, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office charged the 26-year-old with first-degree murder and a number of other weapons charges, just hours after he was arraigned in a Pennsylvania court on weapons and forgery offenses.

Mangione was captured Monday morning in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after he was spotted eating at McDonald’s by a customer of the fast-food restaurant who believed he resembled the gunman in last week’s brazen shooting outside a hotel in Manhattan was sought.

The suspect – an Ivy League graduate from a prominent real estate brokerage family in Maryland – was found with a ghost gun, fake IDs and rambling writings that linked him to the ambush, authorities said.

Mangione, who remains jailed in Pennsylvania, was ordered held without bail during a brief court hearing in Pennsylvania Monday night after being charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery and presenting a false ID to police.

The new charges he has since been charged by Manhattan prosecutors include first-degree murder, three counts of armed robbery and forgery, according to filings.

Authorities had previously said they expected murder charges to be filed in New York in the coming days.

The developments came as Mangione’s family broke their silence and issued a statement saying they were “shocked and devastated” following his arrest.

“We are devastated by this news,” the family said in a statement published on X.
