Rain on Monday in CT before heavy rain, wind and snow showers on Wednesday: NWS

Forecasters say two weather systems will bring two rainstorms to Connecticut this week.

Ahead of the more unsettled weather in midweek, light to moderate rain is likely on Monday, the weather service said. Southern Connecticut is expected to receive up to half an inch of rainfall due to the event.

Monday morning dawned with a mix of sun and clouds. Rain will develop mainly in the afternoon hours, the weather service said.

“There will be a brief reprieve Monday night into Tuesday before heavier rainfall begins in the region beginning Tuesday night,” the weather service said.

Daily highs will be in the low to upper 40s. Morning lows were in the 20s to mid 30s.

Temperatures will warm slightly on Tuesday, with highs in the mid 40s to low 50s. The day will be cloudy with possible patchy fog.

Rain will occur Tuesday evening and continue through Wednesday. A “strong” cold front is approaching on Wednesday, bringing heavy rain, the weather service said. There is a small chance of thunderstorms along the coast due to the system.

The rain will continue into Wednesday night, turning into showers. Temperatures will be warm during the day, with highs reaching 60°C. As temperatures drop overnight, snow is expected to mix with the rain and then “eventually turn into snow showers,” the weather service said.

The weather system is also expected to bring gusty winds with speeds of up to 54 miles per hour on Wednesday and into Wednesday night. Gusts are expected to be stronger along the eastern edge of the state, reaching 54 mph near New London on Wednesday. Heaviest rain and strong winds are expected to hit the region late Wednesday, according to the weather service.

The cold front will exit the region Thursday morning, with a few snow showers possible in the early hours.

The rest of the week will be sunny but cooler, with highs in the 30s and 40s on Thursday and in the 30s on Friday, the weather service said.
