Jesus Ferreira should be transferred to Seattle

We went into this week saying it could be a very interesting week for FC Dallas. After Monday’s half-day trade window came and went without much news for the club, it seemed we wouldn’t be seeing any major fireworks.

Well, that’s about to change. And massively so.

According to Sounder at Heart, the Seattle Sounders are in advanced talks to acquire homegrown forward Jesus Ferreira from FC Dallas via a trade.

According to sources at Sounder at Heart, the Seattle Sounders are in serious talks with FC Dallas about acquiring Jesus Ferreira in a trade. It wasn’t immediately clear what the Sounders would be giving up in the move, but it’s believed it will depend on their ability to sign the 23-year-old forward to a contract extension. Currently classified as a young designated player, Ferreira is currently in the final guaranteed year of his contract with an option for 2026.

The 2024 season was a huge disappointment for Ferreira as he only managed five goals and six assists in 1,400 minutes of play.

The 23-year-old now has 53 goals and 34 assists in his MLS career, in addition to 15 goals in 23 appearances for the U.S. national team.

We will continue to report as this story develops.

Short BDS thoughts

Okay, wow.

I didn’t expect to wake up to this news on a chilly Wednesday morning. I know it broke late last night so some of you had some time to think about it.

Honestly, I think this means FC Dallas hasn’t had any viable transfer offers for Ferreira since the start of the year when MLS rejected his move to Russia. Ferreira seemed frustrated this season with his absence due to injuries. We’ve been toying around with the idea that he could move this winter if the move was right.

Plus, it feels very similar to what we saw from Kellyn Acosta a few years ago. At some point, a player like this, even one who has been with the organization for years, needs a change of scenery to get his career back on track. For Acosta, he went from a move to Colorado to LAFC, which helped him earn some hardware.

I don’t like the idea of trading a player to a conference rival like this, but Seattle appears to be the one offering the money to make it happen. We’ll have to wait and see what kind of allocation package this deal has in store for him. After all, it’s not every day that a Designated Player is traded in MLS, so this should be a pretty big deal.

Where will FC Dallas go from here? Frankly, moving an expensive part of the roster in this way opens up a lot of possibilities this winter. I felt like they were right on track with the aggressiveness they had to go for with their expansion draft protection list yesterday. So it’s possible that this is the first of many dominoes to fall under Eric Quill’s leadership.
