Jamie Foxx is in a grateful mood.
On Monday, December 9th, the eve of the release of his comedy special Jamie Foxx: What happened was… The 56-year-old actor, musician and comedian posted a video on his Instagram account with what he called a “personal thank you” to fans and supporters.
“I just want to jump up and say thank you to everyone who has been praying,” Foxx wrote in a caption. “It’s a blessing to be able to tell you my story in my own way… I hope the jokes make you laugh and I hope the story inspires you.”
He concluded the caption by saying, “It’s been a hell of a journey.”

What happened was… details Foxx’s medical emergency that began on April 11, 2023, and the complications that followed. The Oscar winner confirmed that he suffered a stroke that almost killed him on the set of his Netflix film in Atlanta Back in action.

As a result of a “cerebral hemorrhage that led to a stroke,” he said on stage, “I went out. I don’t remember 20 days.” He also described his daughter Anelise’s guitar playing at his hospital bed, which he said calmed his vitals and helped him heal.
As the special was filming in Atlanta, Foxx began his Instagram video with a loud shout out to the audience. “I haven’t officially been on stage in 18 years. “Atlanta made me feel like I hadn’t lost a step,” he said. “We said this: God is always good, and God is always good.”

Foxx reminded fans that the special will be available to stream on Netflix starting December 10: “Get your popcorn! Let’s go on this ride, let’s listen to this story, let’s laugh, let’s cry if we have to, because I know I did. But my tears now are tears of joy because I don’t think I could do it.”
In response to his Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance in a Television Stand-Up Comedy by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, announced on December 9, he added: “And the Golden Globes, thank you very much for that!”

Jamie Foxx: What happened was… is now streaming on Netflix. Foxx, who turns 57 on December 13, will continue the action from Cameron Diaz Back in action (on Netflix on January 17, 2025) with co-writer and director of the comedy All-Star Weekendwhich stars Jeremy Piven, Robert Downey Jr. and Eva Longoria, among others.
