Player ratings: AC Milan 2-1 Red Star

Player ratings: AC Milan 2-1 Red Star

AC Milan almost took all three points against Red Star Belgrade, scoring a late winner, and it was far from their best performance. Below are the player ratings for the Rossoneri, with low scores being given across the board.

If you haven’t already, be sure to check it out how we decide on player ratings. From the scale to the impact on the rating, we have put everything together there.

Starting XI

Maignan (6): He couldn’t do anything about the goal as it was a powerful finish from a relatively short distance. However, he managed well with his feet and made a few saves, although they didn’t require world-class interventions.

Calabria (6): The captain looked much better, at least compared to what we saw earlier this season, as he was almost always in a good position in defense. Many crosses to his side were blocked and he also had an important presence to reduce the angle to create a great chance for Red Star. After a fantastic cross he probably should have had an assist for Abraham.

Gabbia (6): As expected, he was very strong in the duels and prevailed early on. Red Star created some dangerous chances and the young player cleared many balls into the penalty area, often being in the right place at the right time.

Thiaw (6): Just like his colleague, it was a very solid performance from the first minute with strength in the duels and anticipation – i.e. cutting out passes further up the pitch. The heart of the defense is certainly not Milan’s problem at the moment.

Hernandez (5.5): It was actually a game of two halves as he looked very poor in the first half and then recovered to a decent level in the second. Still, we can expect more from him in both phases of the game, especially in defense as there were some question marks in that phase tonight.

Fofana (6): It was a fantastic ball for Leao to open the scoring, but a few passes beforehand could have benefited from better execution. He needs to eliminate the risky bad passes from his game, which is difficult but holds him back a little. The correct way to describe it would be ups and downs regarding his demise.

Reijnders (5.5): He often managed to get himself into good positions and dared to be more selfish, although this time his shots were unsuccessful. The set pieces weren’t great either, both the crosses and the shots, and it’s clear he can do better.

Musah (5.5): After Loftus-Cheek’s injury he was moved into the midfield tandem and although he had some good forays forward, he made a big mistake conceding the goal. While some argue that it was a foul, the truth is that he didn’t protect the ball well enough. A school mistake in this position.

Loftus Cheek (N/A): He was substituted after just 28 minutes due to injury and it is not possible for us to give him a rating.

Leao (6.5 – MOTM): We saw some very poor passes at the start of the first half, but also a 1v1 with the goalkeeper that was well saved and a fantastic shot to make up for the earlier miss. That goal was really nice and he continued to be heavily involved in the dangerous chances in the second half, even if it wasn’t always fireworks. Nevertheless, he managed to overcome the crucial deadlock.

Morata (N/A): He was substituted after just 29 minutes due to injury, one minute after Loftus-Cheek, and it is not possible for us to give him a rating.

Substitute

Chukwueze (6): It took some time for the winger to get into the game, let alone touch the ball, but he was involved in the winning goal. The cross for Camarda was really nice, even though the finish was difficult, so he gets a pass here.

Abraham (6): He had a positive influence with his energy, but there were a few chances to decide the game after the 1-0 goal. He definitely should have scored the cross played by Calabria, as the goal was wide open except for the downed defender (who he of course hit). The score is saved by the winning goal, but if he had just scored the first goal we could have avoided the drama.

Camarda (6.5): Let’s talk about bad luck again, but everyone knows that he is the reason for this goal because the header was very impressive. This is anything but an easy finish and the goalkeeper reacted surprisingly well.

Emerson Royal (N/A): We didn’t see enough to give a review.
