Pirates of the Caribbean’s “Offensive” at Disneyland abruptly stopped

Disneyland Resort abruptly canceled its version of the Pirates of the Caribbean ride on Wednesday, December 11th. The closure came amid ongoing discussions about the decades-old attraction’s place in today’s Disney parks.

Discussions about Pirates of the Caribbean began in the 2010s when Walt Disney Imagineering announced it would be updating the bride auction scene. Once objectified, brides for sale became independent, adventurous pirates selling chickens.

While some Disney Parks fans were happy to see a feminist twist on the rides at Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort, others felt the historic attractions should stay the same.

Years later, some theme park visitors feel that Walt Disney Imagineers didn’t push the changes to “Pirates of the Caribbean” far enough. In 2023, a woman went viral after saying the New Orleans Square attraction was “kind of weird” and “rape-y.” Other women recalled feeling stared at by the male pirate animatronics.

“It feels like we are entertainment for them and I don’t like that,” one TikTok user wrote. Another said she felt “violated” on the boat ride.

Still, Pirates of the Caribbean entertains thousands of guests every day at Disneyland Park, Magic Kingdom Park, Disneyland Paris and Tokyo Disneyland. Unfortunately, with such a high volume of traffic, sometimes things go wrong!

On December 11, Redditor u/Recovery37 shared this photo of guests evacuating the Pirates of the Caribbean ride after it closed. Guests were still stuck on the boats after the attraction experienced “issues” that led to its temporary closure:

It’s unclear what led to this sudden end to Pirates of the Caribbean. Attraction closures are often attributed to technical problems or guest misconduct, such as dropping objects into the fairway.

Finally, “Pirates of the Caribbean” reopened its doors and vacationers flocked to the attraction at Disneyland Park. “I don’t think the posted wait time of 20 minutes is correct,” u/whyisreplicainmyname commented. “The queue is full.”
