The Rangers were not fazed by the visit of a Premier League opponent or the return of an old opponent in Postecoglou.

They delivered their best performances in Europe this season, taking the game to Tottenham in front of a roaring home crowd.

Philippe Clement’s side played with pace and grit in the early stages and Forster was called into action to deny Nedim Bajrami’s powerful shot.

Vaclav Cerny was heavily involved in the first half, breaking into the opposition penalty area and shooting whenever the opportunity arose.

Rangers were a little unlucky not to take the lead at half-time, but they started the second half in impressive fashion.

Tavernier fired a wonderful ball behind the Tottenham defense and into the path of Igamane, and the Moroccan striker calmly fired the ball into the goal first time.

Rangers continued to look dangerous on the counterattack with Cerny and Mohamed Diomande both going close.

However, they couldn’t find a second goal and Kulusevski’s strike brought the home team back down to earth.

In the end, Dessers still had a great chance to win, but Forster refused to substitute after leaving two defenders for dead.

Clement will be frustrated with the result but the performance will give him great encouragement before they face rivals Celtic at Hampden.

However, he could well be without central defender John Souttar, who appeared to have suffered a groin injury in the first half.
