Stanley travel mug recall: Warning of risk of burns

Millennial and Gen Z shoppers love Stanley mugs. In case you’ve been hiding under the crap, these are reusable drinking cups that have been known to sell out in minutes. Social media users started testing the cups for lead after realizing the popular drinkware was made of lead. According to Stanley’s website, experts say the amount of lead found in these products is normal and not banned by the FDA. Public health officials argue that the products people use to eat or drink should contain no lead at all. Huffpost points out that the consensus among environmental health experts is that zero lead would be the ideal amount in every item you drink. The medical director of the National Capital Poison Center told Huffpost that exposure to small amounts of lead is unlikely to cause any immediate health problems. However, in severe cases it can cause seizures, brain swelling or even death. *** The University of Colorado medicine professor said: “People don’t have to worry about using these products. However, if the cup is severely damaged and the electrode is accessible, throw it away.”

Millions of Stanley cups recalled due to defective lids

More than 2.5 million Stanley travel mugs have been recalled due to a potential burn hazard from a faulty lid. The recall includes stainless steel travel mugs with switchback and trigger features in sizes 12, 16 and 20 ounces. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the threads in lids can shrink when exposed to heat, which can cause the lid to fall off during use. The commission said Stanley received 16 reports in the U.S. of affected travel mug lids becoming detached during use, resulting in two burns. The recalled cups were sold at various retailers, including Walmart, Target and Amazon, between June 2016 and December of this year. Anyone who owns one of the recalled cups should stop using it immediately and contact Stanley for a free replacement lid.
