Luke Grimes says ‘Yellowstone’ fans ‘won’t be happy’ with the series finale

As Yellowstone is nearing the Season 5 finale and possibly the end of the Dutton saga, depending on how things turn out. Luke Grimeswho played Kayce Dutton for seven years, is reflecting on the trip and is already anticipating that some fans won’t be thrilled with what happens, come what may. In an interview with Esquire, Grimes shared his thoughts on saying goodbye to Kayce, the finale’s complicated themes, and why the show’s conclusion might leave some viewers dissatisfied.

The biggest shock of the season came early on with the death of John Dutton (Kevin Costner), a turning point that changed the story and allowed Kayce and other characters to take on new roles. While Costner’s departure was a significant moment for fans, Grimes admitted that it made for a smoother production. “To be completely honest, part of Kevin was gone, which meant part of the conflict was gone,” he said. “It was actually the easiest season we’ve ever filmed.”

For Kayce, this season was an opportunity to take charge, especially with his unexpected plan to save the ranch. “It was a running joke on set that the stupid cowboy found out,” Grimes joked. “Kayce is kind of a silent killer and it’s great when he can use that energy for good.”

Luke Grimes thinks some fans will be upset about the ending of Yellowstone

Grimes himself was deeply touched by the final scripts. Despite the showrunner Taylor Sheridan Grimes had long insisted that he did not want the cast to know the ending so as not to influence their performances, and read the finale before filming. “It really touched me. I felt completely connected to the story again and couldn’t imagine it ending any other way,” he said. When asked if fans will be happy with the finale, Grimes was honest about his feelings and admitted he didn’t think everyone could like it.

“At the rate we’re going, I don’t think they’ll be happy with anything. Some people will find that it is very well written and well implemented. But a large portion will just be angry that it’s over, which is fair.”

Today it was also announced that a Yellowstone Follow-up series with Cole Hauser And Kelly Reillybut with no mention of Grimes. Although he’s open to playing Kayce again in the future, he’s not sure how that would work.

Kayce wants to be a cowboy and be happy with his family” he said. “He doesn’t want the weight of a huge mega-ranch, which is not sustainable in this day and age.” He wants his little piece of heaven. It’s that simple.”
