Kyle Shanahan announces that LB De’Vondre Campbell has resigned from the 49ers

Incredible.

Linebacker De’Vondre Campbell refused to play for the 49ers in tonight’s loss to the Rams. The 49ers needed Campbell as a backup when Dre Greenlaw left the game due to injury. Instead of helping his team, he decided to quit with the 49ers.

“He said he didn’t want to play today,” Kyle Shanahan said. “That was in the third quarter.”

That certainly won’t go down well with the players in the locker room. Shanahan appeared annoyed as he answered these questions. Defensive star and leader Fred Warner was asked if Campbell refused to go in. The same goes for All-Pro cornerback Charvarius Ward.

“I don’t want to say too much about it. I keep it in the house,” Warner said.

Greenlaw made his highly anticipated debut tonight. He was expected to return and start last week against the Rams. However, it was surprising to see him play every snap, but it was understandable since he looked incredible in his one half of football out there.

It’s pretty crazy to see Campbell resign from the 49ers. No player has ever done that with Shanahan as head coach. Campbell behaves like he’s an elite player who shouldn’t be benched. Aside from a few games this season, he has been an extremely replaceable player.

Plus, from the moment he signed with the 49ers, he knew all along that he was the placeholder for Greenlaw. If he didn’t know this, then he is one of the most naive people to ever live on earth. Cowboys linebacker Eric Kendricks opted out of a contract with the 49ers because he didn’t want to be a placeholder.

It’s no surprise that the 49ers will start Greenlaw once he’s healthy again. I fully expect the 49ers to cut Campbell on Friday and get rid of the negative plague in their locker room. It’s time to smoke out.
