The Washington Capitals became the 12th team in NHL history to win 10 straight road games

The Washington Capitals accomplished something historic with their 2-1 overtime win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday.

The victory marked the Capitals’ 10th consecutive road victory and made the 2024-25 Caps the 12th team in NHL history to accomplish the feat in a single season.

The Capitals’ streak began with an 8-1 win over the St. Louis Blues on November 9th and continues 33 days later. They have outscored their opponents by a stunning 48-21 in the 10 games.

The Capitals first broke the franchise record when they defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-1 on December 6, securing their eighth consecutive road win.

“Sometimes we have to take a step back and realize what this group does,” Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery told his team after their recent road win. “I know we’ll just keep pushing and we’ve still got a long way to go, but to win ten away games in a row in this bloody league is an incredible achievement. And you should be so damn proud of that. Ten games in a row taking place in a different building: Warriors. Now let’s take the ship back to Buffalo.”

While the Capitals’ winning streak continues, a nuanced part of it has come to an end. After Aliaksei Protas needed an overtime goal against Blue Jackets goaltender Jet Greaves to secure the 2-1 victory, the team’s winning streak ended at nine in regulation time. According to NHL PR, the Capitals are one of only three teams in league history to win a total of nine straight regular season road games, joining the 1983–84 Buffalo Sabers (10 GP from December 10, 1983 to January 23, 1984 ). the Los Angeles Kings 2023-24 (9 GP from October 17 to November 24, 2023).

There was some more good news regarding synchronization. The Capitals earned their 20th win of the season and played the fewest games (28 GP) to reach the mark in their 50-year history. Washington sits second overall in the NHL standings (42) and is just one point behind the Winnipeg Jets (43) with three games remaining.

“It says everything about our team, how tight it is, how tight it is,” Protas told Al Koken of Monumental Sports Network after the game. “Everyone fights for everyone. We stay connected, stay together. Because we certainly have fewer fans than on the street, but we have to generate our own energy out there and help ourselves. And that’s what we’re doing right now.”
