An active weekend is ahead, with fresh snow expected in the mountains

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) – Happy Friday, Utah! After this morning’s snow showers, the low is moving eastward and the situation will stabilize somewhat this afternoon.

Temperatures warm up at higher elevations, so showers will mostly stay in the mountains and pass by late afternoon. Daytime highs will reach the low 40s along the Wasatch Front this afternoon, with highs in the mid 50s in St. George.

High pressure will develop briefly this evening before decreasing Saturday afternoon as another system approaches. By then we will have a southwesterly flow bringing in mild air and a storm bringing more moisture. Even as this system weakens, models suggest it still releases a fair amount of moisture. Some northern mountain ranges are expected to see significant amounts of snow due to this storm.

On Saturday, northern Utah can expect some rain in the valleys and heavy, wet snow in the mountains as snow levels start higher. Cooler air will move in late Saturday evening, causing the snow depth to drop to the valley floors on Sunday morning. It will continue to snow until Sunday, but in the afternoon it will only ease in the mountains. There probably won’t be much accumulation in the valleys, but the northern mountains could get some good deposition. Estimates are for 5 to 10 inches of mountain snowfall for the northern mountains and western Uintas – higher amounts are possible locally. Southern Utah? You sit out most of the time… little to no precipitation for you.

The weekend storm is moving away and a rapid increase in high pressure will dry things out and warm temperatures slightly. But it won’t last long. Another shallow low will slide Monday night into Tuesday. There is still uncertainty about how much moisture it will bring, but it looks like mostly light snow in the northern mountains right now. In any case, the impact is expected to be minimal, although a wetter scenario could result in slippery commuters in mountainous areas on Tuesday morning.

From the middle of the week it’s all about building up high pressure. Expect drier, calmer weather, but also the possibility of haze settling back into the northern valleys.
