Liverpool were left terrified in the first minute of their Premier League game against Fulham at Anfield on Saturday when Andy Robertson was left alone by Issa Diop. The Scot was left lying on the turf in the penalty area by a wild challenge from the Fulham defender.

Diop was shown a yellow card for the offense despite some confusion in the stadium, with the offside flag saving Fulham from further punishment.

However, many viewers were surprised that Diop didn’t see red for the challenge, which was reviewed and cleared by VAR.

A statement released by the Premier League Match Center confirmed that referee Tony Harrington’s decision was upheld by the officials at Stockley Park.

It read: “The referee has issued a yellow card to Diop for a foul on Robertson. The VAR checked for a possible red card and confirmed the referee’s decision of a reckless foul and a yellow card.”

Andreas Pereira later gave Fulham the lead after receiving a yellow card for a weak foul on Ryan Gravenberch. Many Liverpool fans complained that he too might have been sent off.
