Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence (AI) company, xAI, has officially made the Grok model free for everyone, after initially introducing it as a benefit for premium X users.

After xAI launched an image generation model last week, the Musk-led AI company has now made use of the Grok model available for free, it announced in a press release this week. While users will still need an X account to use the voice and image model, users will no longer need to pay for a verified premium account.

In a post on Find out about sources. Additionally, the recent addition of an image generation model allows users to enter either text or their own images to have Grok generate generative images in response.

Additionally, X has introduced a Grok button on the timeline, allowing users to easily access context and other related information and analysis for a specific post. The latest version of Grok is also three times faster than previous versions and offers overall improved accuracy, new multilingual features and a better ability to follow user instructions.

Grok was initially introduced by xAI last November as a pure language model, making it the company’s first product. Initially, the model was only available to X users, who paid $16 per month for a Premium Plus membership, before the platform reduced verification to a single tier and cost $8 per month. Still, Grok has so far only been available to paid X users, although Musk hinted that this could change in the future.

Earlier this year, xAI launched its first visual processing capabilities for Grok, before officially launching the Grok image generation model, codenamed Aurora, last week. Just a few weeks ago, Musk also said that xAI would soon launch a standalone Grok app that wouldn’t require users to be on X to use the model.

Last month, xAI also launched the first public beta of an application programming interface (API) for Grok, officially allowing developers to build applications using the model. The company also says it will soon add image generation capabilities to the API, allowing developers to create photorealistic graphics for their apps.
