Heavy snow will lead to slick conditions in western Wisconsin on Thursday

Heavy snow will lead to slick conditions in western Wisconsin on Thursday

Our first widespread snow of the season is moving in as a clipper-type low pressure system moves in from the northwest. This will cause snow to accumulate in the area on Thursday, causing slippery and potentially dangerous driving at times. The heaviest snowfall is expected to occur in the morning, so you should exercise extreme caution and take it slow when commuting. Snow will still fall in the afternoon and evening, although to a lesser extent. The windy east-southeast wind also causes some blowing snow, which leads to poor visibility at times. Due to accumulations and travel impacts, Thursday is a 13th FIRST ALARM WEATHER DAY. Additionally, the National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for most of western Wisconsin to highlight the threats.

Scattered snow will occur sometime Thursday afternoon and will eventually taper off in the evening as the low advances further out of the area. As the pressure gradient behind the low tightens and high pressure moves into the area, winds will take on a more northerly flow, resulting in icy wind chills near zero late Thursday evening and into Friday morning. When the snow finally passes, most areas will see around 4 to 7 inches of snow. However, given the possibility of heavier snow bands forming, locally higher amounts of snow cannot be ruled out.
