Liverpool took another gigantic Stepping towards a famous quadruple after securing a narrow 2-1 win over Southampton to secure a place in the EFL Cup semi-finals for the third time in four seasons.

Almost four weeks after their Premier League clash, in which Liverpool emerged victorious with a 3-2 result, the two teams met again at Saint Mary’s Stadium.

Although they didn’t repeat the five-goal thriller this time, Wednesday’s EFL Cup clash was just as exciting, especially with a place in the last four up for grabs.

Liverpool came out of the game buoyantly and were back in the lead just after half an hour thanks to goals from Darwin Nunez and the missed goal Harvey Elliott.

An early second-half goal from Camero Archer set the stage for a nerve-wracking final half hour, but the Reds held firm and boosted their hopes of a clean victory.

After the game, Liverpool coach Arne Slot admitted that he wants to win the trophy, emulating former Reds coach Jürgen Klopp, whose parting gift to the club’s faithful was the League Cup title.

Liverpool will be joined by Arsenal and Newcastle United in the semi-finals, while the winner of Thursday’s showdown between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United will take part.

However, Slot remains confident that his side have what it takes to defend their title.

“We have to defend the cup because the club won It last season,” Slot said (via BBC Sport) after the game.

“I wasn’t involved in it, but the players were involved and of course Jürgen (Klopp) was there with his team. As a club we want to fight for all trophies.

“But us are also aware from Arsenal, Newcastle, Tottenham and Manchester United. It’s definitely tough competition.”

The win at St Mary’s extended Liverpool’s remarkable unbeaten run to 20 games across all competitions.

They will continue their fight for the Premier League title next weekend with a tricky clash against an inconsistent Spurs side at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
