Man Utd vs Tottenham player ratings: Altay Bayindir, what are you doing?! Two massive mistakes from the substitute goalkeeper destroy the Red Devils’ hopes of a comeback in the Carabao Cup

Ruben Amorim’s side almost came close to overcoming a three-goal deficit at Spurs, but failed in the final game after moments of madness from their substitute striker

Manchester United were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup after a thrilling 3-4 defeat at Tottenham on Thursday night. Ruben Amorim made five changes to the starting XI that beat Manchester City on Sunday, with Marcus Rashford once again left out of the squad entirely after expressing his desire to leave earlier in the week.

The much-changed United had to pay for being caught cold early on. A free-kick routine from Tottenham brought Pedro Porro to the edge of the box and his shot was deflected by substitute goalkeeper Altay Bayindir into the path of Dominic Solanke, who volleyed the ball into the goal after being unmarked from close range.

Despite having plenty of possession and territory, the visitors almost went one behind when Dejan Kulusevski’s low cross through the penalty area was met by Manuel Ugarte, who was quite grateful that the loose ball bounced on the other side of the post and behind him .

Almost immediately after kick-off at the start of the second half, United conceded a second goal. James Maddison’s cutback was only half cleared by Lisandro Martinez and Kulusevski reacted quickest to double Spurs’ lead.

From then on United threatened to collapse and Tottenham soon had their third goal. Djed Spence’s through ball sent Solanke running away from Martinez and the England striker was able to get inside with his stronger right foot before firing past Bayindir.

Amorim made a triple substitution to stem the tide and it paid immediate dividends as Joshua Zirkzee equalized. Fraser Forster’s loose pass to Radu Dragusin was blocked by Bruno Fernandes, who made the Dutchman pass. Spurs continued to crumble when Forster gifted them a second goal, firing straight into the onrushing Amad Diallo, bringing United back within a goal.

A 25-yarder from Diallo then caught Forster so unprepared that he had to kick the bouncing ball away as large parts of the stadium were nervous. But Spurs managed to weather the storm and scored a fourth goal in the closing stages of the game. Son Heung-min’s wicked corner flew into the net over Bayindir, who claimed he had been fouled by Lucas Bergvall.

There was a glimmer of hope for United when Jonny Evans headed in injury time from a corner, but that proved to be too little, too late as Spurs advanced to the semi-finals.
