SFSU Suspended Due to Emergency Hazard – Golden Gate Xpress

SFSU Suspended Due to Emergency Hazard – Golden Gate Xpress

San Francisco State University is currently on lockdown after an anonymous threat of violence was made against the campus at 12:26 p.m

According to an email from University Police, people on campus should seek shelter or go to a safe location.

“Stay away from windows and doors and remain there until further instructions. If you are not on campus, please do not come, all classes and activities are canceled for the day,” the email said.

This is a developing story.

According to an update from UPD, individuals on campus are still advised to remain sheltered in place.

“Out of an abundance of caution, we ask that you continue to shelter in place,” UPD said. “An update will be sent around 4 p.m.”

2:10 p.m

Peyton Smith, a third-year student and assistant at Manzanita Square, was sitting with her friends outside the Humanities Building after completing a final exam when she received the notification.

Smith was then informed of the existing shelter through a call from UPD when she and her friends decided to seek shelter at Marcus Hall.

“I think I’m upset because there’s not a lot of information,” Smith said. “I know there were drug sniffing dogs in the RA thing, but if I wasn’t an RA I wouldn’t have access to any information and I think that’s even scarier because you don’t know if it’s a bomb threat or an active shooter.”

There are currently no further updates from UPD on the situation.

Many students left the J. Paul Leonard Library after Matthew Blevin, the library building coordinator, discovered an unknown package.

Mira Foster, a librarian, advised the building’s Peet’s Coffee employees to continue to seek shelter in a library storage room.

“We all received the UPD call at different times,” Foster said. “My phone rang first and others didn’t.”

1:38 p.m

University Park North residents received a notification from SFSU Emergency Operations Services.

“Once a building is cleared of bomb-sniffing dogs, residents are allowed to go to their residence on campus or leave campus,” EOS said in an emergency update.

While UPN residents received notification from EMS, they also received instructions from UPD to continue the shelter-in-place order.

Two helicopters and UPD Community Services officers arrived to conduct a search.

Those on campus should continue to shelter in place, according to an alert from SFSU.

“UPD is conducting a campus search with local authorities due to an anonymous threat of violence,” the alert said. “UPD will send an update once the campus search is complete.”
