A narrow band of fast-falling snow brought up to two inches of snow to some parts of the Chicago area overnight, the National Weather Service said, although it fell apart in the early morning hours.

Some areas in the northern and northwestern suburbs saw the heaviest snowfall, according to the NWS. Rockford recorded 1.9 inches of snow, with salt trucks operating since 2:30 a.m

“Please slow down and allow extra time to reach your destination this morning,” the city posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

According to NBC 5 meteorologist Alicia Roman, some light storms or showers could continue into mid-morning Wednesday as the band moved through eastern Will County and into northwest Indiana.

“After passing the narrow strip, we are dry,” said Roman. “The rest of the day will be cloudy and cool,” with high temperatures around 30°C, which is average for this time of year.

Temperatures will continue to hover around 30°C on Thursday, with dry conditions in the morning but another chance of snow forming in the early evening from around 5pm

Snowflakes were expected to move further east around 7 p.m. Thursday evening, Roman said, with light, isolated snow showers expected across Chicago.

Those snow showers will continue into Friday morning, Roman said, with lake-effect snow expected in northwest Indiana Friday evening.

This system could result in accumulations of more than five centimeters in parts to the north and west, while lower totals would occur elsewhere, Roman said.

While temperatures will remain around 30°C on Friday, they will drop to 20°C on Saturday, Roman said. But the cold spell won’t last long as temperatures rise again on Sunday and readings will be in the 40s by midweek.

According to Roman, the maximum temperature on Christmas Day this year is expected to be 43 degrees. Temperatures of over 40 degrees are expected by the end of Christmas week.

Will Chicago have a “White Christmas” in 2024? Here’s what we know so far

According to the NWS, a holiday is considered a “White Christmas” if there is at least an inch of snow on the ground on December 25th.

But there haven’t been many of those in Chicago in recent years. According to the NBC 5 Storm team, there have only been three since 2010, the last time being in 2022.

The Chicago area is expecting above-average temperatures Dec. 25-31 with a partly sunny and dry Christmas Day, according to NBC 5 meteorologist Alicia Roman. While showers could occur the day after Christmas, temperatures well above freezing will ensure precipitation in the form of rain continues.
