Winds will die down in Des Moines this cold Friday

Iowa Weather: Cold and cloudy today, with a warm-up period through the weekend

Yesterday, but it’s still blowing. IT IS. YES. And we’ll work on it all morning and then let it cool down again overnight. WE STAY COLD ALL DAY. And even as we head into the weekend, a slow warm-up awaits us. So don’t expect Saturday to be sunny and certainly not 75, but it will be warmer than today and then Sunday, warmer than Saturday, and so on and so forth. WHEN WE GET INTO NEXT WEEK. COLD. IT WILL BE COLD TODAY AND THE WIND WILL BE VERY STRONG ALL THIS MORNING. TEMPERATURES ARE STILL LOW NOW, I AM EXPECTING SOMETHING OF THE COLD AIR GOING WEST AND NORTHWEST TO PUSH A LITTLE FURTHER EAST BEFORE THE SUN RISES. So over the next few hours we’re going to reduce some of these degrees a little bit. AND THE NORTHWEST WIND, GUSTS STILL DEVELING 25 AND STILL CONTINUING IN SOME AREAS, WITH WIND GUSTS OF 35 MILES PER HOUR. BUT KEEP IN MIND, NOW AROUND 10:00 AM THERE MAY BE MORE OF 20 TO 25 GUSTS, THEN EVEN DOWN TO ABOUT BETWEEN GUSTS, NOW AFTERNOON AND ON THE WAY HOME FROM WORK, YOU WILL HARDLY SEE ANY EVIL. We will be experiencing mostly 5 to 10 mile per hour WINDS, AND THAT’S WHAT WE WILL ALSO SEE TONIGHT. So these winds calm down. HOWEVER, WIND COOLING WILL STILL BE A LARGE FACTOR FOR US ALL DAY. The wind is still mostly in the single digits around 10 a.m. and is not warm at all. AND THEN THEY STAY IN THE TEEN EVEN UNTIL THIS AFTERNOON IN THE WARMEST TIME OF THE DAY. AS THE WIND CHILL IS FURTHER NORTH WHERE THERE IS MORE SNOW ON THE GROUND, WIND CHILLS WILL ONLY OCCUR IN THE TEENS. And even starting tonight, we’ll stay in the single digits and 10 digits because of the wind chill. And as we wake up Saturday morning and the temperature still doesn’t rise too much, we’re seeing wind chills Saturday afternoon now reaching into the 20s. So we’re working in that direction, but the first half of the weekend will still be cold, at least with satellites and radar pretty accurately showing the light snowfall here. A FEW SMALLER storms cannot be ruled out, mainly east and south of the metro, but they could clear later today as clouds remain overhead for most of the morning. WE COULD ACTUALLY SEE SOME RAYS GETTING AWAY VERY SHORTLY IN THE LATE MORNING INTO EARLY AFTERNOON, AND THEN MORE CLOUDS MAY APPEAR THAT WILL END UP IN THE LATER AFTERNOON AND EVENING. AND WITH THIS CLOUDY COVER, WE COULD SEE SOME LIGHT CRUISES TONIGHT, BUT THAT WILL COMPLETE AS WE GO INTO SATURDAY MORNING. So that’s not what you’re going to see when we wake up at the start of our weekend. AND WE COULD EVEN SEE A LITTLE MORE SUNSHINE. Expect partly cloudy skies throughout Saturday as lighter and thinner clouds will move overhead. But the sun should help get some of them out of here. BUT THERE IS NO WARM UP TODAY. NOT MUCH SUN ALSO. IN THE FORECAST. However, the wind will decrease. It’s a windy beginning, but there will be no windy ending when we start tonight. Stay cloudy. THERE IS A CHANCE FOR SOME MYSTERY. So don’t be surprised if you see this if you have plans for Friday night. We officially start the winter season on Saturday, but it’s still a cold day as this wind will still bring a chilly air into Sunday. Now we’re starting in the 40s and will see highs in the mid 40s again on Monday. So that’s the warm-up where we’re faltering a little bit, but still well above average as we head into the holiday season
