Sonic The Hedgehog 3’s post-credits scenes, explained

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is in theaters now and like the first two films, it features an ending credits that gives us an idea of ​​what to expect in the next film, which is apparently releasing in 2027. Sonic 3 isn’t quite as self-explanatory as the first two films if you’re not already familiar with the blue blur and all of his friends (and enemies). The post-credits scenes of the first two films felt like natural extensions of the films they came from, but Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is a bit more confusing and may have left new fans a little confused. Fear not, because we’re here to fill in the gaps and speculate on what it all means. Spoilers ahead!

The first post-credits scene is the meatier of the two. It starts with Sonic running around, seemingly fighting Tails and Knuckles like seen earlier in the movie. It returns to its bearer: a hooded figure who is revealed to be a pink hedgehog before the film cuts to black.

If you’re not one of the long-time fans who probably stopped by this point in the theater, Amy Rose is the hammer-using vigilante. She originally debuted alongside Metal Sonic on the Sonic the Hedgehog CD in 1993. In most of her early appearances, Amy was seen as Sonic’s one-sided love interest – she was in love with the hero, but he was too busy being the fastest alive Being a hedgehog considers something as trivial as romance. However, over the years, Amy has developed into a much more well-rounded character and a team leader in her own right. Historically, she’s brought some girly-pop feel to the Sonic cast, and after being a boys’ club for three films, the live-action universe desperately needs that.

But what do she and Metal Sonic do in the live-action films? This scene also feels quite disconnected from the rest of the film, so we can only draw so much from this brief exchange. Given that Sonic has traveled to a different part of the country than we’ve seen in the films so far, it’s entirely possible that Amy has already been alone on Earth for some time and has decided to become a vigilante in New York work. How she got here, where she’s from, and how she’ll feel about more alien animals in her space remains to be seen, but since Sonic the Hedgehog 3 reinforces the idea that Sonic and his kind are aliens from different lands in some cases In places it is obvious that Amy is not from Earth either.

The bigger question mark in this scene is Metal Sonic. Eggman builds the robotic hedgehog in the games, but as we saw less than 10 minutes earlier, Jim Carrey’s version of the mad scientist appears to have tipped the scales in a final moment of heroism. Granted, they also pretended to kill him at the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, but there were more explicit references to his survival than anything else in Sonic 3. Agent Stone, Eggman’s loyal sidekick, apparently has a new chapter at the end pitched in the movie too, so it’s probably off the table. In theory, anyone could have seen all the events of the first three films and decided to create a robot version of Sonic, but the question still remains as to why. That’s the main difference between this post-credits scene and the previous ones; This film feels almost abstract, introducing new ideas and characters that have no clear, direct connection to what happened in the film it accompanies. I wouldn’t be surprised if this scene appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, perhaps 10-15 minutes into the film, with more context to fill in those gaps. But the only thing we really know for now based on this scene is who the new cast members will be in the next film.

The second post-credits scene is much shorter and more straightforward. We see that one of Shadow’s inhibitor rings left a small crater on Earth after falling on the planet during the final space battle. The shot freezes for a moment before we see Shadow walk into the frame and pick it up. It’s not much, but it confirms that Shadow survived the destruction of the Eclipse Cannon and will be in the next film. That’s not too surprising. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is heavily based on Sonic Adventure 2, in which Shadow is presumed dead after the final battle, only to return in Sonic Heroes after being rescued by Eggman. There are also reports of plans for a Shadow-centric spin-off, so of course they haven’t killed him off for good.

Overall, I’m starting to wonder if Sonic 4 could be a loose adaptation of Sonic Heroes. Metal Sonic is the main antagonist of this game, and by the time Shadow’s supposed spin-off introduces the rest of his team, treasure-seeking spy Rouge the Bat and decommissioned Eggman robot E-123 Omega, they’re already halfway there, most of them Having Heroes’ cast taken into account.
