Expect plenty of company on the streets of Massachusetts and in Logan this holiday season

There could be record numbers of travelers on Massachusetts roads and at Boston’s Logan International Airport this holiday season, officials warned. AAA expects more than 120 million Americans to travel this week, with an estimated 107 million traveling by road, 8 million traveling by plane and the remainder traveling by train or cruise ship. At the MassDOT Highway Operations Center in South Boston, officials keep an eye on roads across the state. “We will be monitoring for violations of the handheld electronic devices law, which is very clear. The bottom line is: “Keep your phones away from your hands,” said Col. Logan International Airport is also expecting a rush of travel. “We had a record year at Logan Airport – the most passengers ever. As a result, we expect the holiday season to be no less busy,” said Massport CEO Richard Davey. As a reminder, TSA recommends that travelers keep all gifts unwrapped. This year Logan is offering a special gift wrapping service. “If you are traveling between the 19th and the 24th and have unwrapped Christmas or holiday presents, we will wrap them for you in some of our terminals free of charge,” Davey said.

“Some major highways may experience minor delays, particularly around Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and the afternoon and possibly early evening of the 26th, immediately after Christmas,” said Jonathan Gulliver, MassDOT highway administrator.

MassDOT expects the heaviest traffic volumes will likely occur this weekend and the weekend between Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Logan International Airport is also expecting a rush of travel.

“We had a record year at Logan Airport – the most passengers ever. As a result, we expect the holiday season to be no less busy,” said Massport CEO Richard Davey.
