7 New Movies and TV Shows to Stream on Netflix, Prime Video, Max, and More This Weekend (December 20)

Happy holidays everyone! Finally, it’s time to take a much-needed break from your job and enjoy lots of food, drink and good company. And You can handle the time you spend in front of your TV.

As for the latter, our penultimate weekly “What to Watch This Weekend” list of the year is, as always, filled with offerings from the world’s top streaming services. From the last new movies of 2024 to the return of popular series, you’ll find something worth watching after you check your out-of-office email for the last time this year. After all, you deserve it. 2024 was a good year for war dramas, such as Apple TV Plus projects flash And Master of the air. Now we can add The Six Triple Eight to the list; The last of December’s new Netflix films tells the inspiring true story of the Women’s Army Corps’ only color unit in World War II, also known as the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion.

855 women join the war effort to sort through a three-year backlog of mail that wasn’t delivered to American soldiers far from home. Despite discrimination and war-torn conditions, they sort 17 million pieces of mail and bring hope to the front lines. The Six Triple Eight certainly has a unique premise that could make it one of the best Netflix movies (although the Rotten Tomatoes critical rating suggests that’s not the case). Still, I’m excited to learn more about a heroic battalion that many of us didn’t know existed on Netflix.

I love a good nature documentary – and Apple TV Plus delivered just that with its latest natural history show this week The secret life of animalswhich may become the latest addition to our guide to the best Apple TV Plus shows.

A 10-part series told by Downton Abbey And Paddington Starring Hugh Bonneville, Apple’s program aims to delight and educate us all with never-before-filmed behavior from over 70 different species across all seven continents. Before you watch, check out our exclusive clip from episode nine, which shows a thrilling fight between two kangaroos. You shouldn’t miss this, I promise.

Virgin River Season 6 couldn’t have come at a better time and I really want an invite to Mel Monroe and Jack Sheridan’s romantic wedding. As preparations are underway for Mel and Jack’s spring wedding, season six will feature new twists, love triangles, wedding drama and secrets from Mel’s father’s past, taking us back to Virgin River in the 1970s.

Virgin River is, in my opinion, one of the best Netflix series to watch on Netflix this December. So make sure you don’t miss out on the wedding of the year!

Clint Eastwood’s latest film is one of the Max trailers I’ve been most excited to see, and with it now streaming on Max, I can’t wait to get my eyes on it. I love Gran Torino And Juror #2 looks to be another huge success for the legendary actor and director. As opposed to Gran TorinoEastwood remains behind the camera and directs an all-star cast including Nicholas Hoult, Toni Collette, JK Simmons and Kiefer Sutherland.

So what’s it about? The legal thriller follows Hoult’s journalist character, who is called up for jury duty and soon realizes this He may be responsible for the death of the victim. Exciting legal thrillers are some of my favorite television series and I’m sure this one will impress. The 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes is also promising! So keep an eye out for its inclusion on our list of the best Max movies.

If you’re like me, then you probably have the obligatory favorite films that hit the big screen every Christmas – and for me, this list covers the best Harry Potter films. Well, this year you can mix it up with this Prime Video game show that can best be described as Harry Potter meets Harry Potter The Great British Bake-Off In Harry Potter: Wizard of Baking.

The six-episode series caused such a stir when it premiered on the US Food Network in November that Amazon acquired the streaming rights to broadcast it in the UK and Ireland. Hosted by James and Oliver Phelps (Fred and George Weasley) and culinary judges Carla Hall and Jozef Youssef, be sure to enjoy this magical treat as we wait for the reboot of HBO’s Harry Potter.

This three-part documentary follows NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers as he undergoes an intensive rehabilitation program after a horrific Achilles tendon injury. You can expect to see many of the defining moments from his life and career. The first episode looks at how his injury derailed his debut with the New York Jets in 2023. Elsewhere we’ll see how he experimented with alternative medicine and religion, which sparked some controversy and drew further criticism with his stance on vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Netflix documentary gives Rodgers the opportunity to show his side of the story, including his reaction to winning Super Bowl XLV. There’s a lot to explore with this series, and it definitely sounds like it could be a great addition to our guide to the best Netflix documentaries.
