Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman is a big fan of the new College Football Playoff after his team beat Indiana 27-17 in its first-ever game with a 12-team format.

Freeman called the victory a “historic” moment when speaking to reporters after the game.

“I’ve never been part of an environment like this,” Freeman said. “It’s not often in life that you’re the first to do something, and as I told the (team) there, we were the first to win and play a playoff game at Notre Dame Stadium. This is historic. Something we will treasure for the rest of our lives.

The Fighting Irish, seeded No. 7 in that category, hosted their in-state rivals at Notre Dame Stadium on Friday night.

After a sloppy start that featured a punt and interceptions by both teams on the game’s first three drives, Notre Dame scored first on Jeremiyah Love’s 98-yard touchdown run after the defense committed a turnover.

The Irish eventually took a 27-3 lead before Indiana scored two late touchdowns in the fourth quarter that made the score seem more competitive than it was.

Notre Dame has won 11 straight games since a 16-14 loss to Northern Illinois. It is the program’s longest single-season winning streak since starting 0-12 in 2018 before losing to Clemson in the College Football Playoff semifinals.
