Hawaii’s Kīlauea volcano is erupting and you can watch it live

Located on the southeastern coast of the island of Hawaii (or the “Big Island”), Kīlauea is one of the most active volcanoes in the world – and it is currently erupting.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, the volcano “erupts in Halemaʻumaʻu crater in the summit caldera,” meaning it is confined to the area.

“As of 6:30 a.m. HST, the eruption in the crater has stabilized and there are no immediate threats to infrastructure,” the Observatory continued. “The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory lowers Kīlauea’s volcano alert level from WARNING to NOTICE and the aviation color code from RED to ORANGE.”

Kīlauea Volcano’s last eruption was in September of this year. You can watch the live stream below to catch some real-time action.

The eruption began around 2 a.m. HST this morning. Of course, in terms of dangerous impacts, such activity can generate large amounts of volcanic gas, Pele’s hair (a volcanic fiber), and other volcanic fragments that can be carried by the wind. The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory urged residents and visitors to minimize their exposure.

The observatory also originally reported that there could be wall instability, ground cracks and rock falls in the immediate vicinity.

The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said it will “continue to closely monitor this activity and report any significant changes in future announcements.”
