American Airlines is back up and running after flights were grounded due to mishaps

American Airlines has suspended all flights across the country for exactly one hour due to a technical glitch, but the airline is back up and running in time for Christmas and holiday travel.

The Federal Aviation Administration grounded all American Airlines flights just before 7 a.m. Tuesday after the airline reported a technical issue that affected its entire system.

“An issue with a provider’s technology had a short-term impact on flights this morning,” an American Airlines spokesperson said in a statement to the airline Washington Examiner. “This issue has been resolved and flights have resumed. We sincerely apologize to our customers for the inconvenience this morning. It’s all hands on deck as our team works diligently to get customers where they need to go as quickly as possible.”

The flight ban comes as millions of travelers plan to fly to visit their families and loved ones over the Christmas holidays. The Transportation Security Administration expects 40 million passengers to be screened during the holidays and through January 2, 2025.

Since holiday flights are usually fully booked and all seats are occupied, flight delays can lead to cancellations that take days to process.

American Airlines’ temporary grounding comes two years after Southwest Airlines stranded two million passengers. Southwest was ordered to pay a $35 million fine as part of a $140 million settlement stemming from a federal investigation into the 2022 Christmas strandings.

Earlier this year, Delta Airlines also suffered a four-day outage following CrowdStrike’s global technology outage in July, stranding tens of thousands of passengers.
