OpenAI’s widely used artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT is down, with numerous social media users reporting complaints.

Others noted issues with OpenAI’s Sora video generation model.

“We are currently experiencing an issue with high error rates across ChatGPT, the API, and Sora,” the company wrote in a status update late Thursday morning Pacific Time. “We are currently investigating and will provide an update as soon as we are able.”

The company later said the problems were due to an “upstream provider that we are currently monitoring.”

A company status page indicated that ChatGPT and the company’s application programming interface (API) had experienced a “major” outage, while Sora had experienced a “partial” outage.

According to monitoring site Downdetector, more than 12,000 people have reported an OpenAI connection in the last 24 hours.

Reddit users on Thursday shared images of problems with the ChatGPT login screen, as well as error messages they received while using the chatbot itself.

Predictably, the outage sparked numerous jokes on social media.

“I sat down to study on the iPad that was open and Chatgpt went down,” X user @2dwade posted along with a video of someone spitting out their food. “I refuse to google like a caveman.”

“Well ChatGPT is down, I’m back to using my own brain,” wrote X user @daansky.
