Foggy and slippery dangers during the journey to Christmas

Foggy and slippery dangers during the journey to Christmas

NWS alerts are posted HERE.

After the holiday season, Upper Michigan and the Great Lakes region will experience foggy and slippery hazards as high pressure brings a milder side to winter but fills the region with suspended moisture. Dense fog limiting visibility below a quarter mile and freezing drizzle may coat surfaces with light ice. The risk of rain also plays a role and can lead to slippery areas on roads and sidewalks.

The mild pattern will lead to high temperatures in the region, reaching the 40s toward the weekend. But widespread rains Friday night into Saturday may create slippery hazards on UP roads – in western UP, the rain is turning into a wintry mix as colder air begins to flow into those areas this weekend.

The thaw and rain will also impact the region’s winter recovery, including uncertain ice on inland lakes until it cools again around New Year’s – including a chance of snow.
