Director and writer James Gunn went into depth about his motivations and thoughts on the upcoming film Superman Film in a new interview.

Gunn sat down with me Screen letter for an in-depth interview about Superman and his thought processes behind almost every aspect of the film.

While Gunn talks about things like the tone of the film, David Corenswet’s performance, Krypto’s personality, and more, he also addresses one of fans’ biggest concerns: the briefs.

“There was a time when I was developing the Superman costume with David Corenswet and Juliana, our costume designer,” Gunn said. “And it came together, but it had the red trunks, it had the whole thing. And we actually talked a lot back and forth about the red trunks. I even talked to Zack Snyder about it. He said, “I tried a billion versions of the trunks and I just couldn’t get it right.” And I said, ‘I understand why that is.'”

He added: “I didn’t know about the suitcases. I wanted to use the swimming trunks, but I couldn’t, I kept taking them off. And I walked in, it’s very colorful, the trunks are on and I thought, “God, I don’t know.” It’s just so colorful. David, how are you feeling?’ He says, “I love it.” And I think, ‘Really, it’s so colorful.'”

Gunn said, Corenswet added: “I’m an alien from outer space who can fly and lift buildings, and I shoot laser beams from my eyes that can dissolve things. “I want children not to be afraid of me. So what am I going to wear?”

“And I think that was really part of the origin of the costume,” Gunn added. “And I saw the character in a new way. And it also showed me how, before we even started filming, David really took everything, every moment, all of his decisions and what he was going to do very seriously. And he doesn’t want to scare the children. And I thought that was a pretty cool thing that I’ve had in the back of my mind for the character since that moment.”

The entire interview is worth a read and is one of the most in-depth we’ve seen to date in this early phase of film funding.

Superman will be in theaters on July 11, 2025.
