WOOF: Washington Huskies Country Former 5-star WR from Texas

Washington has added a portal WR after securing a commitment today from Texas WR transfer Johntay Cook II, who chose the Huskies over Florida.

A native of DeSoto, TX, Cook played at DeSoto HS, which has produced many talented players over the years, including Von Miller and Byron Murphy II, the Seahawks’ 2024 first-round draft pick. Cook had a fantastic senior year in HS with 85 Catches, 1,530 yards and 22 touchdowns, earning him a five-star rating before joining the Longhorns.

Despite Texas’ talented and deep WR room, Cook still saw the field as a true freshman and had 8 catches for 136 yards. He seemed primed for a more productive year, but had almost the same stats with 8 catches, 137 yards, and 2 TDs due to a toe injury that would linger for most of the season. After getting injured and falling down the depth chart as a result, Cook announced he would enter the portal and use his redshirt to help preserve his eligibility. He will have 3 years to play 3.

For those waiting for UW to make a splash in the portal, look no further than Cook. A former five-star playmaker who is considered a major four-star transfer candidate and will likely be an immediate impact starter. While he may not have racked up many yards in his college career so far, he brings two things to the table that should make Husky fans very excited; Explosiveness and versatility. The explosiveness speaks for itself with his YPC average of 17.1, but in addition to the stats when watching him play, he accelerates extremely well and is able to reach his top speed faster than most players. With this type of ability, he is able to catch screens, make quick crosses, and cut routes – all plays that Fisch likes to show off frequently.

As I mentioned, Cook should be slated to be the starter for the 2025 season, along with Denzel Boston. Cook is also fast and quick enough to play out of the slot in certain situations, and Rashid Williams could join the pair and form a fearsome starting trio of WRs. He is at his best when he has the ball in his hands and has high playmaking skills, using his speed and making defenders make misses in open space.
