Flood Warnings for the North Bay, East Bay – NBC Bay Area

The National Weather Service issued flood warnings for the North Bay and East Bay as rain returned over the weekend, drenching the region.

The warnings are in effect through Friday morning for portions of Marin, Sonoma and Alameda counties, where excessive rainfall could lead to flooding in urban areas and small streams.

Further north, a flood warning has been issued for the Russian River near Hopland, where minor flooding is forecast. The warning is in effect from late Thursday through Friday afternoon.

Just days after part of Santa Cruz’s wharf collapsed into the water, coastal communities are facing another round of powerful waves. Jocelyn Moran reports.

A high surf warning is also in effect until 4pm Sunday as large waves continue to hit the coast. Breaking waves of 20 to 30 feet will peak Friday and ease by Saturday, forecasters said.

“Although these waves are smaller than the monsters we had on Monday, the coast is still dangerous,” the weather service warned. “Inexperienced swimmers should stay away from the water, wave watchers should keep a safe distance and no one should ever turn their back on the sea.”

Rainfall totals are expected to be 1 to 1.5 inches for the North Bay valleys and 1.5 to 3 inches for the North Bay mountains through Saturday morning, forecasters said.

A half inch to an inch of rain can be expected across the San Francisco Peninsula and East Bay. A quarter to half an inch thick is predicted for the South Bay valleys and a half to 1.5 inch thick for the South Bay mountains.
